Lukajange District
Lukajange District is the oldest Church District of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT) – Karagwe Diocese. The District Office is located close to the Cathedral, approximately 200 metres from the Diocesan Head Offices. Nearby towns include Kayanga, which is the location of the Karagwe Government District headquarters, and Omurushaka, an important business centre.
Lukajange Church District is composed of eight parishes:
- Lukajange Parish – Lukajange Congregation
- Kayanga Parish – Kayanga and Karaizo Congregations
- Nyakahanga Parish – Nyakahanga, Nyakiziba and Bigoro Congregations
- Nyabwegira Parish – Nyabwegira and Ndama Congregations
- Nyakahanga Hospital Parish – Nyakahanga Hospital Congregation
- Rukole Parish – Rukole, Ihanda, Cherunga, Chelima, Chonyonyo, Rularo and Katinkimo Congregations
- Omurushaka Parish – Omurushaka Congregation
- Bujuruga Parish – Rwamugurusi, Rujebe, Kibombo, Kakashombwe and Kabale Congregations
2. Church Leadership and Staff
The Dean and Assistant to the Bishop, Rev. Yared Namala Wakami, serves as the District Pastor.
The other pastors serving in the District are:

- Rev. Jovenary Kalolo – Kayanga Parish
- Rev. Texavier Biita and Rev. Rose Kamana – Nyakahanga Hospital and Omurushaka Parishes

- Rev. Elieth Kiiza and Rev. Dina Mberwa – Nyakahanga Parish
- Rev. Blassio Kibirizi – Bujuruga Parish

3. Activities and Plans
Lukajange Church District is part of the Karagwe Diocese (KAD). Therefore, the plans and activities of the District are guided by the KAD Strategic Plan 2014–2018.
The first goal, which is also a key goal in KAD's Strategic Plan, states:
“Building a community with a strong and stable Christian faith through proclaiming and teaching the Word of God.”
Generally, this is the goal that Lukajange Church District commits itself to achieving at the District level.
To achieve this goal, the District undertakes the following activities:
- Preaching and teaching the Word of God during worship services and open-air meetings.
- Administering the Sacraments, including Holy Communion and Baptism, during church services.
- Conducting house-to-house visits to church members.
- Officiating weddings and providing comfort and pastoral care to mourners during funeral services.
- Conducting seminars on stewardship, leadership, marriage and family matters, financial regulations, youth and the changing world, HIV/AIDS, interreligious dialogue, environmental conservation, transparency and accountability, and combating corruption.
- Teaching Christian Education in primary and secondary schools.
- Organizing and teaching Sunday School and confirmation classes.
- Providing opportunities for small projects and loans to empower families, including women's SACCOs and dairy-cow projects.
- Organizing and supporting church groups, including women's groups, choirs and youth groups.
- Mainstreaming advocacy by exposing ministers to the Rights-Based Approach (RBA), integrating evangelization with gender issues, and developing programmes that raise the voices of oppressed and vulnerable people.
- Building and renovating church buildings. Current projects include congregations in Nyakahanga, Bigoro, Chonyonyo, Ihanda, Nyakanongo and Kibombo.
- Constructing a new modern church in Kayanga town, with plans currently underway.
- Constructing water tanks at Chonyonyo and Cherunga in Rukole Parish.
- Constructing pastors' houses for Bujuruga and Omurushaka Parishes.
4. Partnership
The partnership between the Church Districts of Leverkusen and Lukajange was established in 1985. It brings together Christians from different cultural backgrounds in Germany and Tanzania.
Leverkusen is a Church District of the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland. Through this partnership, Christians from both countries work together in serving God's people spiritually, mentally and physically.
Together, the two Church Districts propose and implement various projects, including:
- Renovating and constructing church buildings.
- Constructing water tanks.
- Organizing and conducting seminars for various groups within the parishes.
- Supporting primary and secondary education for children from economically disadvantaged families.
- Supporting environmental conservation activities, including the protection of the Kibombo and Chonyonyo forests.
- Sharing experiences and learning about one another through mutual visits.
- Praying for one another.
- Engaging in discussions on various issues affecting the two societies, including theological themes.
Through this partnership, Christians from Leverkusen and Lukajange recognize that Christ has united them as sisters and brothers in God's mission to the world.
