Our Whole Lives: Sexuality and Our Faith

KAD: 09-13, April 2018. For four days, KAD hosted a workshop on Sexuality and Our Faith, the workshop was coordinated by the Church of Sweden under Dr. Josephine Sundqvist, together with her were facilitators Amy Johnson from The United Church of Christ in USA, and Rev. J.P Heath from Namibia. The workshop contained 22 participants from dioceses of Karagwe, North Western and ELCT headquarters Arusha.

Our Whole Lives, together with Sexuality and Our Faith, helps participants make informed and responsible decisions about their relationships, health and behavior in the context of their faith. It
equips participants with accurate, age-appropriate information in six subject areas: human development, relationships, personal skills, sexual behavior, sexual health, and society and culture. It provides not only facts about anatomy and human development, but helps participants to clarify their values, build
interpersonal skills and understand the social, emotional and spiritual aspects of sexuality.

Living in a culture that is deeply conflicted about sexuality, participants had ample time to discuss on what’s religious about sexuality education and how is sexuality education a ministry. At the end of the training, participants agreed that our religion must play a
role in creating safe environment where people can come to understand and respond to the challenges facing them as sexual beings. As faith communities, we must promote justice for all people and affirm the dignity of every individual.

It was three days of intense training by professional sexuality educators, Bible reflections on sexuality, but mostly, discussing four
values of our whole lives which are self worth, responsibility, sexual healthy, and justice and inclusivity.

The workshop ended on Friday evening with the Holy Communion service that was graced by Bishop. Dr Benson Bagonza, and later, certificates
were awarded to participants as approved facilitators of Our Whole Lives for Ages 12-15.
