English » KARUCO » Introduction

The Karagwe Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania is currently engaged in a big project of establishing Karagwe University College (KARUCO), which will focus mainly on studies related to sustainable agriculture and environmental issues. Planned to open on the 29th of October 2017, KARUCO envisions transforming rural agricultural communities and building a prosperous, just and sustainable society through education, entrepreneurship, environmental conservation and social justice. The students will be introduced to best agricultural practices, enabling them to become agents of change in the society. Particularly, the university aims at empowering women so that they may become economic drivers in their communities.

KARUCO is being built on a 919.2 acres (372.422-hectares) plot of land, which is located in Kishojo Village of the Karagwe District,in Kagera, Tanzania. The Kagera Region is located in the northwestern corner of Tanzania, sharing the borders with Uganda to the north, Rwanda and Burundi to the West, Kigoma Region to the South, and the Geita Region to the East.

The establishment of KARUCO is a viable way towards alleviating poverty and improving the livelihood of the millions of people, living in rural areas and depending on subsistence agriculture.
