Why establish a university in Karagwe? Why is the church involved in such a huge project? Why a university of agriculture and environmental studiies?

These are some of the questions asked by people, when they hear about the plans of the Karagwe Diocese (KAD) of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT) to establish Karagwe University College.

It is true that the 16th Synod of Karagwe Diocese, held in 2006, decided to establish the first University in Karagwe. The University will be called "Karagwe University College" (KARUCO) and will be a constituent college of the Tumaini University, which is also owned and run by the ELCT.

KARUCO will focus on agriculture and environmental studies.Agriculture is the backbone of the Tanzanian economy. Over 90% of the people living in Karagwe are small-scale farmers, angaging in agriculture mainly for subsistence. People living in rural areas face a lot of challenges, including a lack of clean water, poor health services, poor infrastructures, poor education, just to mention the few. That is why, those who graduate high school flee to urban areas where they hope to get a job and earn a better living. Their future is uncertain. The future for those who stay in Karagwe is certain to live in desperate poverty.

Karagwe Diocese holds education as critical to national economic development and alleviation of poverty. KARUCO wants to provide education which will help transform agriculture and bring about the sustainable development in Tanzania. KARUCO will focus on hands-on applications of best practices related to crop production, animal husbandry and business entrepreneurship. Students and faculty will collaborate with farmers in the community and will help create a transformed mindset that brings about economic development and growth.

Furthermore, KARUCO aims at training skilled personnel in environmental matters, who will help to avert the current trends of environmental degradations worldwide.
