About the land and the people

Karagwe - the land

Tanzania is part of East Africa. The Karagwe Diocese (KAD) is located in the north-western part of Tanzania, bordered by Uganda in the North, Rwanda in the West and Lake Victoria in the East.

Karagwe’s landscape is characterized by mountains, ranging from 900 to 1800 meters above sea level, and valleys. There are two rainy seasons from September to December and from March to May. The climate is tropical with an annual average temperature of 26 degrees Celsius.

The land of banana
The vegetation ranges from a thick equatorial type of forest in the northern part to predominantly Savannah bushes in southern Ngara District. All over Karagwe, the landscape is dominated by grasslands and banana plantations. So Karagwe is called ‘the land of banana’ in the rest of Tanzania.

About 96 percent of the inhabitants are peasants and depend on the products of their farms for their livelihood. The food crops include banana, potatoes, bones, cassava, corns and millet. In most cases production is for domestic consumption.
Coffee is the major cash crop. But due to poor trade policies, the coffee price has been steadily declining for the last years. This influences the farmer’s income and the development of the region unfavourably.

As a matter of fact, most of the children finish school after primary grade and attend a simple and hard-working life. Electricity and water tanks are not a living standard at Karagwe. In average seven persons live together in one household.
